About this Website
This zero-nukes website originated in 2002 as a project of the Interfaith Committee for Nuclear Disarmament (ICND), a Washington-based coalition of religious organizations. In its initial phase from 2002 to 2005 the website contained statements on nuclear weapons by religious organizations, military leaders, civic sector organizations, and ideas on how to get to zero, drawn from various reports and views of experts. These items are preserved in the Archives of this updated website.
After a period of inactivity with no new entries the website has been renewed in the spring of 2009. In now is sponsored by Methodists United for Peace with Justice (MUPWJ), a national association of laity and clergy. Website moderator is Howard W. Hallman, who formerly chaired ICND and who is chair of MUPWJ. He is author of unsigned material on the website.
As renewed, the website has two functions:
- Pull together knowledge related to the quest for zero nuclear weapons, including
- Information on the global nuclear arsenal, treaties, and international organizations.
- Statements and proposals from various individuals and organizations on the desire to eliminate nuclear weapons and how to proceed.
- Description of a variety of citizen campaigns seeking a world without nuclear weapons.
- Provide an opportunity for individuals to present their ideas on how to get to zero nuclear weapons, including scenarios for -
- Nuclear disarmament
- Nuclear nonproliferation
- Safeguards and verification
